Munro, who took over as the Trust Chairperson a year after its inception, has been instrumental in the development and expansion of Locator Beacons New Zealand, the country's first personal locator beacon hire agency. Munro’s commitment to providing affordable access to personal locator beacons (PLBs) for New Zealanders in remote and potentially perilous environments has transformed and elevated the country's search and rescue operations. His vision and relentless effort have turned what began as a local initiative into New Zealand's largest locator beacon rental operation, with an inventory of 550 units available across 92 outlets nationwide. Since 1996, Munro has been a linchpin in the Southland Locator Beacons Charitable Company and its parent Trust. When it comes to safety in New Zealand's great outdoors, few names are as influential as John Munro's. The award was presented by Hon Kiri Allan, the Association Minister for Transport, acknowledging Munro's substantial contribution to search and rescue operations over a sustained period. In a ceremony held at the grand hall in the N ew Zealand parliament building on May 17th, 2023, John Munro, the indefatig able Director of the Southland Locator Beacons Charitable Company, was bestowed the prestigious NZ Search and Rescue Gold Award (Support).
